Coloring Pages for grown-ups

I feel like the quarantine is already starting to wear people down and we’re only a few weeks in. I have a feeling this is going to last for a long time.

We always joke that my illustrations of people are basically just coloring pages so I figured I would make some actual coloring pages for anyone who needs a way to take their mind of things for a bit.

Feel free to download and print any of these for your own use. Here’s to staying sane!

Drawing Club

With quarantine officially underway I figured I would practice my drawing skills with friends and started a little drawing club prompt on IG.

This is my first real attempt at drawing something in a realistic style and y’all, I thought my head was going to implode. I started with the ear and it took me MORE THAN AN HOUR just for that piece. I’ve never spent so much time drawing a single thing in my entire life.

I use procreate on my iPad to do this and thank god for layers or it would have been a regrettable disaster. The iPad sometimes feels like cheating since mistakes aren’t permanent but it’s really the only way I can commit to trying something like this. I am so painfully impatient and get unreasonably frustrated when things go wrong. So it’s a start. I hope to eventually move to colored pencil, but this will do for now.

I’m pretty happy with him overall. There are plenty of problems, but given I have always struggled with drawing anything with dimension I feel like this isn’t too shabby.

Single Sheet of paper zine!

This video brought back some serious memories of my teenage years, also known as the riot girl zine heyday. I LOVED making zines and it’s something I oddly still think about doing rather frequently. Since it looks like we may all be on pandemic lockdown soon, maybe it’s time to get back to making these little baddies!

Stretching out

I recently discovered the hyperrealistic art of CJ Hendry and literally lost my goddamn mind. I was looking up how to draw balloons and came across this drawing of hers:

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!

Y’all, I’ve tried my whole life to draw and have never been able to wrap my head around it. It’s probably why I’ve always stuck to mixed media arts. But to be honest, it’s also always made me feel like I’m not a legitimate artist. Not that we all have to draw realistically to be an “artist” but I feel like the basic foundations are good to know?

So I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of learning how to draw a realistic sphere. I spent every night for a week drawing one, and it slowly started to come together. I used a variety of online tutorials and was surprised how inconsistent everyone was in their instructions. I started too heavy, then I got shy and went way too light. Eventually, I found a good middle zone, although my shadow could still use a lot of work. I’m a lifetime away from drawing like CJ, but here’s to being a beginner.
